Ah! Statistics....  Well the trick there is to determine what is being 
counted as a 'project' and what is considered a 'success' and who is 
deciding which is which.  The number frequently bandied about 
(~80/20% failure/success) bears a marked resemblance to Pareto's 
theorem and could justifiably describe the bulk of all human activity, 
including our personal lives.

My question regarding java was an attempt to elicit a more detailed 
description of the exact nature of the environment used and 
problems encountered, and what combination of events or situations 
turned out to be the 'show stopper'.  I am still interested in 
discovering this information if the original writer would consider 
providing it, on or off list as he deems appropriate for his 
circumstance.
