Best way to implement Cognos

My $0.02... If a single server is possible, I also would vote for an
HPe3000 and TurboImage. If you absolutely must have a CPU at each site, I'd
go with the cheapest Compaq Alphas you can get (OpenVMS) and use RMS
indexed files instead of a database. When properly coded (accent on
'properly') this can be as fast as TurboImage, and _almost_ as reliable.
I'd have to check current pricing on the two platforms, but last time I was
involved in that end of things (several years ago) there wasn't a 'small
enough' (ie; cheap enough) HP MPE box to compete. At the 'big end' of
things, there are enough advantages to TurboImage that the price becomes
irrelevant; even if an Alpha was cheaper initially, it wouldn't be in the
long run.

All of this assumes there's no political/technical reason that says you'll
be moving to Oracle for the database in the future... in which case the
platform becomes almost irrelevant, and the same forces that make the
decision for Oracle will probably mean you wind up on a Unix box of some
type anyway. Regardless, if you go with any relational database, you'll
need bigger hardware everywhere.

Byron

Undoubtedly, one single HPe3000 system, with WAN links to the sites.
As I understand it, your communication lines within mainland USA are in
excellent shape, and Internet can be treated as LAN, almost.

The single HPe3000 will prove cost effective, and a "resource lean"
environment for both software and hardware management, but an excellent
scaleable platform.

IMHO, by combining the HPe3000, Image/SQL, and PowerHouse you won't get a
more cost effective/reliable platform/database combination anywhere, both
from a developers as well as users point of view.

Regards

Neil

I am currently working with a customer who will be rolling out a PowerHouse
application consisting of 200 screens 100 quiz and 50 Qtp to multiple
locations each location has about 10 concurrent users. I am curious what
everyone thinks the most cost effective/reliable platform/database
combination would be for the one development location and the other run
time
locations?
