'Y' in defined item name

Broken for me on 7.10.G3, Alpha VMS 7.3.
Doesn't seem to matter what the format or separator is either. 7.10g was I
believe where y2k compliance & nullseparator etc was introduced.

My query: EVERY TIME when the character "Y" is in THIRD position of a
DEFINEd item name, the date SEPARATOR is not printed. Why is that?
