Aurthur's suggestion was a good one.

Here is the command I was able to piece together , with his help pointing
me in the right direction:

tr "~" "\012"<ar_extract_fileB.txt > gear2199907221030.dat

Of course, the last field in the QTP run which creates the file is 

DEFINE d_nl CHARACTER*1 = "~"
