PowerHouse on LINUX

Happy New Year everyone!

I thought that subject line might catch your attention :-)

As there has been a lot of talk in the industry about the rise of the LINUX
operating system (including a few threads on this list), I'd like to take a
straw poll amongst those frequenting the list to help us gauge how much
demand there might be for PowerHouse 4GL (and PowerHouse Web) on LINUX.

If you already have LINUX, or if you are seriously considering using LINUX,
I'd greatly appreciate if you could spare a few moments to reply to this
e-mail (preferably directly to me at conrad.whittall@cognos.com, leaving
PowerHouse for LINUX somewhere in subject field) and answer the following
questions.

1) Do you currently have LINUX?

2) If so, how long have you had it?

3) If not, how soon do you expect to obtain it?

4) Which LINUX distribution do you (intend to) use, e.g. RedHat, S.u.S.E.,
Caldera, etc. ?

5) What hardware do you (intend to) run it on, e.g. Intel, Sparc, Alpha,
etc. ?

6) Which relational database(s) do you (intend to) use, e.g. Oracle,
Informix, InterBase, etc. ?

7) Which web server, if any, do you (intend to) use, e.g. Apache, Netscape,
etc. ?

8) How many developers do you think would use PowerHouse on LINUX at your
installation?

9) How many users do you think would access your PowerHouse applications on
LINUX?

10) Would you use PowerHouse on LINUX as a replacement for existing
PowerHouse servers, in addition to existing PowerHouse servers, or for a
completely new PowerHouse installation?

11) If you would be replacing or supplementing existing PowerHouse servers,
which operating system do you currently use, e.g. MPE/iX, MPE/V,
OpenVMS/VAX, OpenVMS/Alpha, HP-UX, AIX, etc. ?


Obviously, I can't promise anything at this stage. However, depending on how
many replies we get to this (and other research we are conducting), it will
certainly help us to determine whether there is sufficient demand for
porting the PowerHouse products to this dynamic up-and-coming platform.
