PowerHouse on LINUX

Hi Conrad and Happy New Year to you.
I think it would be useful if someone who knows about it, would explain what
LINUX is. I assume it is some sort of cheap UNIX type operating system, but that
is where my knowledge about it ends.
What are the benefits of LINUX, is it just the price? What are the deficiencies,
if any? What hardware does it run on? What products can you run on LINUX, e.g.
databases?
