I have worked on an HP3000 for 19 years. I can only remember having
our computer down one day in the 19 years due to hardware failure.
I would would have to say that HP 3000 w/MPEix is an extremely
reliable box. During the last 5 years, I don't remember it ever
crashing except for a severe thunderstorm and we didn't have a
power conditioner at the time. We've had lots of troubles with
the air conditioning but the HP still never crashed. And during
upgrades it has never taken more than a few hours to get everything
running as before. We have been through several boxes of HP3000s
and operating systems and never had any serious problems. We still
have programs running in RPG that were written over 25 years ago
on an old IBM mainframe and ported over to the HP.

My new iMac freezes up at least 4 times/week! (The newest Macintosh)

Since I have never worked on any other mini computer I have nothing
to compare to. But I know of one business in our town that had an
HP3000 and management planned to convert to an IBM box because
IBM did a lot more wining and dining of management. After 5 years
they still had both boxes running side by side and couldn't get everything
converted. They went through several programmers and noone would
stay long enough to get the job done. I believe they finally got converted
all the way over but it was a huge mess.

I love HP and Powerhouse and would be happy to work on them for the
next 6 years until I can retire. I am looking forward to doing stuff on
the Internet in the next year. We have a mix of PC software and Mini
computer software. Some things are better to do on the PC and others
are better done on the mainframe. Our business systems, which are
my babies work well on the HP3000 and we have no plans to convert
them to something "better" in the near future. My users are very
happy and that's my job, to keep my users happy.
