Porting Powerhouse code

Mike,

We did a port to a slightly different platform, namely from MPE/iX with
TurboImage to Oracle on a SUN Solaris.

No, I can't tell you exactly how many resources we spent on the project,
since several parties and projects were involved simultaneously.

Our experience, however, can be summarized as follows:

- Setting up PH on the SUN did take us some time, since we were not quite
experienced with the new platform and it's OS. (But on the HP, we have
approx. 20 years of experience). By the way, the folks at Cognos support
were great here.

- Having the Oracle to run properly also seemed to take quite a few
resources, but was not done by our company.

- We did make our product (A system for handling cargo in airlines all the
way from you deliver the packages to the airline - until the receiver picks
them up someplace on earth) Y2K-compliant while converting.

- What puzzled us was the fact that we spent much less resources than we
expected to - in the real porting business. We developed some sets of
changes, that we applied to the different groups of programs automatically
to some extent. We worked out new procedures to replace e.g. the temporary
files and job-streaming, to implement in the programs.

- The next phase was considering how the system worked with respect to the
old hierarcical base and the new relational one. We had to consider a
"commitment-strategy" and implement it succeedingly.

As you know, it's the same with all large projects: The time you spend on
the planning and preparations will be paid back several times in the later
phases. Once again, this old philosophy proved to be right.

As to my knowledge, there's no such formula for the conversion business -
but hopefully I'm wrong and if that's the case - I do hope you'll share your
findings with the list :-)

If you need more details, I'll be happy to provide you with such.

Good luck!

Hans-Ole
