Environment variables

Hi All,
Here is what I would like to do -
Run QTP inside a shell loop, if records updated then set a Unix environment variable to some value. In my shell script, I will check to see if "updated" and quit or loop again.
Another way would be to write a permanent subfile with records found and then after running QTP, check if subfile exists but that is pretty clunky. Just looking to be a little more stylish.
I suppose I could fgrep in my log file for a specific string like "filename 0" to try to pick off the number of records updated (when 0).
Thoughts?
