I agree: in this world of increasing scrutiny of procedures and introduction of ITIL, CobIT, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc., it is imperative to have strong policies, procedures around source code control and development environments.
Especially key is to have separate environments for test/development.
We also have the majority of our Quiz & Qtp running from SOURCE CODE. This has a couple of significant advantages:
* you cannot lose the source code, or if it does get lost it shows up pretty quickly!
* it is far easier to work with subfiles, especially under Unix, which doesn't have MPE's "temporary" files

How does one get surprised if your using a source code control library
and backing it up? It makes it tough to 'loose' code and get a shocking
'surprised'.
Is Code Management System (CMS) still available for VMS? If not or it
'costs', then surely there is some open source alternative.
