Maintaining Large RMS files over 1 million blocks

Luckily for me I have not come across that one yet :-) maybe more luck
than judgement! - a good reminder to always be very careful before
undertaking such procedures!

I seem to recall that if you reorganise on a regular basis (especially
files that are appended, updated and possibly deleted from regularly -
where the 'damage' is done) the optimiser will manage file extensions
better than adhoc infrequent optimisation - and the file access
performance improves too.

In fact, we reorganised the file not only to a .NEW version, but also to
another device to improve performance, and only replace the original
.DAT file should the new file be within 10% allocation size
(dir/siz=all) of the original - this ensured no gross errors where made.

I seem to recall that the optimiser makes some ludicrous assumptions
regarding allocation for secondary keys, so I would suggest you get
someone
to inspect the output before you go ahead and build your file based on
it's
conclusions :)

Desmond

If you are trying to optimise the RMS file on OpenVMS I would recommend
you try:

$ anal /rms /fdl FILE.DAT /out=FILE.fdl
$ edit /fdl /nointer /anal=FILE.FDL FILE.FDL
$ convert /fdl=FILE.FDL FILE.DAT FILE.NEW

Please ensure that you are using the default EDT editor with no
enhancements. To do this try 'edit==edit/edt'

This script will:
	Create an FDL of your existing data file
	Optimise the FDL
	Convert your existing data file using the optimised FDL to a new
version of the file.

We optimise all of our RMS data files overnight using this method on a
weekly basis to ensure that files are efficient

Trevor

Hi Folks

When I run the

$convert file.dat file.dat

it takes several hours. The file is 1.5 million
blocks.

IS there a more efficient way to optimize the file?

Is moving to Oracle 7 on OpenVMS Alpha good option?
Thanks
