That's one of the big advantages of PowerHouse, its ability to access
multiple data sources at the same time. So the answer is a big yes, we
can access RMS file and relational databases from the same dictionary
and the same program. In fact we can access multiple relational
databases from different vendors at the same time. This means that
moving from one data source to another is relatively easy with
PowerHouse.

As for your other questions, each data source has its strengths and
weaknesses. I don't know that there's any particular technical reason
not to use a mix of data sources. Certainly if you're moving to
relational, you want to move as much as possible into the relational
database to make full use of its functionality. On the other hand, some
things are best left outside. For example, if you receive a file from
another company or location, you might not want it inside your
relational database.

And as for which versions of PowerHouse, PowerHouse started supporting
relational databases (RDB) on OpenVMS in 1987. On MPE/iX, PowerHouse
supported IMAGE, KSAM, and MPE files from day 1 (1979). So it has always
supported multiple data sources.

Currently on OpenVMS (8.40) PowerHouse supports RMS, Oracle and Oracle
RDB.

Hi,

We dont use a relational database on vms so this might be a nonsensical
question.

Can you have rms and say classic oracle in the same dictionary / same
programs? e.g. an entry screen which writes to rms and oracle or a qtp
which picks up an rms file and writes to a relational database.

If it is possible is it inadvisable for any reason? or only possible in
certain versions of ph?
