hp mpe to vaxvms migration

G'day Stephen

The main issue in the conversion will be the standard non-relational to relation data structure changes.

Oracle Rdb has the ability to have table, page or row level locking. Depends on how you set it up. The older versions had page level locking as the default. I assume you'll be going to the latest version. This RDBMS is used by high performance search databases and generally does better than other Oracle RDBMS's at dealing with very large amounts of data very fast.

I have been able to override and redefine the way PowerHouse displays Rdb columns by using Element definitions in the PHD. This is not recommended by Cognos but it usually works.

Going to OpenVMS also gives you other nice tools to play with. RMS is a very fast and robust non-relational file system and mailboxes can be quite useful in a real-time environment.

BTW, I hope you don't really mean 'vaxvms' and are really talking about OpenVMS on an AlphaServer.

Good luck,

Blue

we have a client who is thinking of moving from mpe/image to openvms/native or relational.

anybody have any horror stories about non-portability issues?

e.g. image allows locking at the database level. is there an easy way to implement multi-record locks in either native or relational tables? also, powerhouse loses the ability to redefine records or elements when accessing tables in a relational database. is there any way round this?

any other pointers on things we haven't thought about?
