The company may never have activated the licences as they are still
running on 729C8. I only installed the 800 series software from the
distribution tapes this week. So there may never have been
anything to back up to begin with, which would account for the
absence of the licence file on the backup tapes. The issue is
unclear, not inexplicable.

I have received no reply from Cognos for the past twenty-four hours,
either from my direct e-mail or from my voice mail messages so I
presume that they have no interest in solving this problem. I find it
less than satisfactory that a company can lock up a piece of
software to "protect" its interests, but provide no easily accessible
method for the party that paid for it to make use of it. Am I to
conclude from this singular lack of interest on Cognos's part that
had the system been destroyed in a fire that the end-user would be
unable to run its software ever again unless it purchased an
otherwise unnecessary and unused service contract? Is this even
legal?

Sincerely,
Jim
