Correction on this. All 8.4 platforms will not have the POW interface.
Certainly 8.30 (and therefore 8.40) has POW. However the other platforms
will not have a POW interface at the 8.4 level. It is on the list for 8.5,
however it may not be included for all platforms.

just one more minor point, RE 'OpenVMS version features will not be
available to you', the only significant feature I can only think of is
mailboxes ( all 8.4 platforms will have a POW interface )

Hi all,

just one minor point, PH 8.4 for NT/Windows will have the quick terminal
interface, due out around July.

regards,
Joe Boyle.

G'day George

I have not converted an OpenVMS app to Windows NT but I have worked in both
environments.

Problem 1 - the Windows NT version of PowerHouse has no terminal interface
so you need to use either PowerHouse Web or Axiant. Of these Axiant offers
the best re-use of your existing code but in either case there is a LOT of
work to do. With PowerHouse Web you may have to re-think the whole
application interface. Even with Axiant issue such as aesthetics can bog
you down.

Problem 2 - many OpenVMS version features will not be available to you under

Windows NT. You will need to identify these and re-write the code
accordingly. If you will be using a SQL type database such as MS SQL Server

using embedded SQL in the code will significantly enhance performance.

I don't know what box you are running OpenVMS on but there is NO Windows NT
machine that comes close to a contemporary AlphaServer. Also given that
Compaq is porting OpenVMS to the Itanium processor (64 bit from Intel) it
will mean that OpenVMS has a long life and will run on boxes produced by HP,

IDM, Compaq, Dell, whoever as long as it is an Itanium. Being that OpenVMS
is 64 bit and it will be awhile before Microsoft produce a version of NT
that is not a patched-up version of the 32 bit OS, OpenVMS is a much better
strategic platform for the future for high-power applications. Purchase
costs difference will be insignificant and you can retain your in-house
OpenVMS expertise. Clustering of OpenVMS systems is light years ahead of
Windows NT clustering. No-one has ever successfully hacked into an OpenVMS
system without having a privileged account and viruses are not written for
this OS, unlike for Windows NT.

Regards,
Blue

We currently have a number of applications running on PH 7.10.G3,
VMS. We are considering on migrating to PowerHouse on NT. From some
initial inquiries I have been informed that QUIZ and QTP will port over with

no problems. QUICK (Qdesign), however, will require some rewriting due to
differences is presentation. I have been led to believe that about 20% of
the code will have to be re-written, but was given no specifics. Is there
anyone out there that has covered this same ground who could shed some light

on the conversion process? If there is, I'd like to know your experiences
and some of the pit-falls.
