This was part of a specifications for an interface for another system.
We've found another way
to deal with the issue. Curiously though the Matchpattern function can
test for Null but we can't
create a null field value. Like you say Richard - it must have been a
bit left out/forgot and missing
bits are hard to find, eh?
Thanks again to all for responding. Life is easier for having this
List to go to.

George

George,

I think David is correct - DB2/400 allows null values but they have to
be
specifically included in the file specification when it is created. My
reading of the 6.07 PDL manual is the PH doesn't appear to allow
creation of
null fields (maybe Cognos left that bit out !)

Maybe you need a "psuedo - null" eg we have a lot of time fields in our
system and represent an unknown time with 99:99:99 since 0 (00:00:00)
can be
a genuine value.

regards
Richard

No politics today just work (darn!).

I'm trying to load null values into a field. I thought I remembered
doing it once on an HP
to the tune of [ DEF fieldname CHAR*nn = "" ]. The double quotes with
nothing in between
would do the trick. I tried it on the 400 but when I test with
Matchpattern I looks as if I'm not
there. Don't see it in the Quiz manual - can anyone help.

Thanks,
George
