WAITING ON LOCK... (VMS)

Does "WAITING ON LOCK" last forever, or does it resolve ?
It means that one person/process/thread has a resource (file, I think,
rather than record) locked, and another is waiting for it.

There's two possibilities:
1. The Quick is (sometimes?) holding a lock the QTP needs.
2. The QTP is sometimes clashing with another, unrelated, user.

I'd recommend ignoring file locks, and going for record locks.
Also code all your quick/qtp to take just the access it needs: eg, specify
open read where possible, and specify share where possible too.
If you want to use compatible 3GL locking, record locking is normal RMS
locking, and won't require any special 3GL coding for compatibility.
The DALOCK stuff is about file locking, and I'm fairly confident it's
severely flawed.

So how is 8.30Z1 - how does it differ from 8.30, and what issues are there
in upgrading from 7.10 ?
[I still haven't got round to using 8.30 - we've not got around to our
pre-upgrade code tidying]
