Best way to implement Cognos

G'day Byron

According to the research firm Tech Data, the TOC for an AlphaServer running
OpenVMS is considerably less over 3 years than AS/400, RS6000 (AIX), Sun
(Solaris) and HP9000 (HP-UX).

However, when one considers the need for a database, preferably a RDBMS,
Oracle options on OpenVMS are very expensive. A more cost effective
combination might be a Windows NT machine with MS SQL Server 2000. While
the NT version (until 8.4) of PowerHouse doesn't allow terminal screens, it
does support Axiant and PH Web. Version 2.4 of PH Web resolves a lot of the
issues around making web screens behave more like terminal screens.

What amount of data are they expecting to put through this system? Oracle
Rdb is still the performance king when it comes to very large amounts of
data. MS SQL 2000 has improved a lot since its predecessors and the user
interface makes data management tasks simple for non-DBAs.

With PH version 8.3 the OpenVMS features have been re-incorporated. I
believe you get the option for either the POW style of dictionary or the
compiled form as found on other platforms.

So in the end it comes down to:
How much can the customer spend up-front? (Win NT/SQL server is cheapest)
Is total cost of ownership important to them? (Alpha/VMS is cheapest)
What technical skills do they have in-house? (UNIX, VMS, NT)
Will they have a DBA available to support the database? (Oracle is yes, MS
SQL Server if no)
Will they be processing huge amounts of data, especially in find mode?
(Oracle Rdb is king though DB2 is getting better)
What is the management direction? (read prejudice)

As far as the number of users and separate locations is concerned, I think
all the platforms are equally as good. OpenVMS does have superior
clustering technology with Galaxy.

Regards,
Blue
