The clash of ELEMENTs

Leonard

The only time you'll need to worry about this is when one of the items is
character and another is numeric. Character items can be of any length but
PH will use the element definition as the default. Same with numeric items
-- the items can be of any type or several types (integer, real, zoned,
packed) -- the element definition will be used as the default.

But -- as long as you never want to use Qutil to create the database -- you
can call the items in the record definition anything you want. PH doesn't
care -- it only moves an Image buffer into its own internal buffer as one
big chunk, in much the same manner as it does for KSAM records. You loose
some of the automatic initialization in PH but in these kinds of cases it
probably isn't much help anyway. The only thing that really matters is the
record length.

JWP
