Creating a PHD from QDD source

Many thanks to the various members of this list who responded so helpfully. A
few people suggested the QDDTOPDL utility that I had noticed on our system, but
assumed -- incorrectly as it turns out -- that it required a compiled QSCHEMAC
and not just QDD source statements.

The application that I am developing is one that reports from eight data bases
in four products provided by a third-party vendor.

Now that I have all the definitions extracted from the data bases and converted
into PDL source statements, I have to deal with a few duplicates. In one case it
is a duplicate of a dataset and there are four element names with duplicates.

I do not see in the PDL and Utilities Reference Manual any method of qualifying
objects, so it looks as if I will have to resort to some brute force. I just
need some advice about the relationship of sizes of ITEMs and their controlling
ELEMENTs.

1. In the case of CHARACTER ELEMENTs and ITEMs, I assume that the ELEMENT size
should allow for the largest instance and that it is legal for the ITEM in a
record to be smaller than the ELEMENT definition.

2. What about numeric ELEMENTs? If I start out with Numeric Size 010, can both
Datatype Integer Unsigned Size 4 and Datatype Zoned Unsigned Size 6 depend on
the ELEMENT? If not, I will just have to rename one of them <sigh>

Thanks in advance!
