a.)	A public message inadvertently send to only one person, 
and then send to the list when the error is discovered;


or


b.)	A private, and possibly embassingly frank, message sent 
accidentally to a public mailing lists and archived on the 
internet, with no hope of recovery or removal.


It is quite common that lists are set up so that a simple reply 
will go directly to the original writer whose message to the list  
you are replying to.  It is far less common that the default 
reply address is the list owner.  


The other common practice, of having the default reply target 
being the list address itself, leads to all sorts of problems; as 
when a mal-formed e-mail responder program generates a 
feedback loop between itself and the list management 
software.


I belong to a great number of technical mailing lists and I am 
not aware of any of these that have the list set as the default 
reply address.
