Migrating from PH to Java / RDBMS

Interesting thread so far (from last week into this). But one thing I haven't seen brought up as a reason for switching from PH to Java is genuine necessity. Our environment is one running Powerhouse PC accessing Interbase (and we all know where support for Interbase is going). So we are hitting all sorts of walls (Powerhouse PC client on the PC, Interbase etc...).
We are currently way understaffed and don't have the resources to support the current system correctly, much less move it forward. But unfortunately circumstances outside our control are dictating we do something. We are examining some alternatives, and switching to a Java environment is one of them. I tend to disagree with some of the postings concerning the difficulty level of converting. With the newer Java IDE's (I use Visual Cafe') if all you are doing is "cloning" a Powerhouse Quick screen making a Java screen that has the same functionality, it doesn't seem to be that daunting a task. Granted we are early into the exploring phase of this, I'm sure there are plenty of problems to face.
I am NOT saying we will have a deep understanding of Java that someone with years of experience will have. But if all you are after is moving from one functional set of screens, duplicating the functionality, do you really need to have a deep "programmers" type knowledge?
I'd really appreciate others input as their projects progress. I think more and more of this sort of conversions will happen, if not to Java then to more "modern" Cognos products (any sort of conversion is difficult!).....
