G'day Bob

I have just finshed reviewing the PH 71.0 to 8.20 differences spreadsheet.
I think that the proposed changes for 8.30 will be great! Good work.

I'd like to make a couple of comments please.

FILE TYPE RDB/VMS - how will this affect using Oracle Rdb 8.0 on a Windows
NT platform with PowerHouse 8.30?

Mailbox Support - I know that other operating systems don't have the same
mailbox concept as OpenVMS but I seen many apps on MPE and UNIX trying to
emulate what VMS mailboxes do, with a lot of coding. Couldn't we have an
option to declare a file as a mailbox type in non-VMS systems and have PH
handle the file automatically as if it were a mailbox? After all, AUDIT
files are not a special type of file recognised by the OS yet by declaring a
file as AUDIT PH handles that file in a special way.

PHD, POW, PHDADMIN, etc. - as few thoughts:

1. While I think this option is a MUST, would it not be better to somehow
build this functionality into the new GUI tool (BI) Architect? I believe it
would not take much to make BI Architect understand PDL syntax and with a
few mods allow to tool to send the PDL to the server and compile it.

2. Couldn't all OS versions have some sort of switch during PowerHouse
install to have the option of PHD or PDC dictionary types? I believe that
the PHD version in OpenVMS is realy a small database of 5 ISAM type files.
UNIX at least should support this.

3. If the dictionary type is PHD then could BI Architect be able to directly
read and update it via ODBC?

I really think the Cognos's (and ours) prosperity will lie in making the
whole tool set, ADT and BI, more integrated. Then the salespeople will
truely be able to say that Cognos has a complete end-to-end product set.

Regards,
Blue
