Cross machine file transfers

One of my clients has similiar databases on two different machines: an
HP MPE & a Unix. They would like to know how easy it so transfer data
between one database and the other. Unfortunately neither are the
database types the same nor do all the files map out exactly the same.
It would be nice if we could create Powerhouse subfiles on one machine,
move them to the other machine and reload the data-but this doesn't seem
feasible.
Has anyone else had the same issues and, if so, how have you resolved
them?
Thanks for any ideas.
