VMS/Rdb to UNIX/Oracle (classic)

<RANT MODE ON>

Hold on a minute Carol.

Cognos has been 'planning' version 8.3 with the VMS features for a year
now (first cited by Conrad Withall in this list). It should be well
past the planning stage and into alpha if Cognos is serious about it. I
am disappointed progress is so slow.

I have been woking in a HP/UX PH environment for more than half a year
now and find working WITHOUT the PH VMS features is a REAL drag. PHD
management is unix is the pits.

Is it possible for Cognos to sponsor working groups (SIGs) of very
interested product users to facilitate the 'planning' and design stages
of these changes. Cognos realy must change its approach to application
development if it wants to compete with new business models now
evolving. By including very motivated users in JAD sessions Cognos
could implement RAD and get its ADT products out-the-door in a much more
timely fashion.

Who in this list is interested in getting better product turn-a-round
from Cognos? Who would be interested in providing input to assist
Cognos in this process? PowerHouse/Axiant 4GL is as much OUR product as
Cognos's many of us have given years of our working lives to this
product. We use it because will still believe in it (besides getting
paid :)).

Conrad, Bob, Carol, et. al. What can this list do to help YOU in making
a better product faster? What can WE do in promoting PH to our managers
and other prospective users?

I appologize to those readers only interested in technical PH stuff but
without some emotive, philosphical discorse, they maybe NO technical
stuff to talk about before long!

Blue

Hello Ged et al:

ADT Product Management in the process right now of planning a new V8
PowerHouse that will incorporate the most useful and important of the
VMS
features that our customers use in V7. I won't give a target date in
this
forum, but please rest assured that it is in the planning stages.

best regards

Hi Bert,

Yes I'm very interested in any information you have. We have also been
looking at using Axiant for a GUI front end, but one of the issues is
moving
away from VMS specific commands: mailboxes, logicals, POW (dictionary
maintenance), etc... we use these a lot. Of course if we are moving (?)
to a
UNIX/Oracle (classic) environment this becomes a requirement not an
issue.

I also have a copy of PH V8.20D but I was thinking of the V8 release
with
'VMS' options so that there are minimum changes. Any news Bob?

Ged

Hi Ged,

We are currently migrating IB on VMS to ORACLE on NT, with PH still om
VMS
PH820 on VMS is already available, but on request only, Contact your
sales
rep for this, he's the one who can arrange this for you.
There are a few issues, but this is PH only, not specific to Oracle, let
me
know if you are interested.

Regards,

Bert

Hi Blue,

The usual story, a bean counter (accountant) for an IT director, big
ideas
about selling an in house system. The other problem is the ambiguous
messages from Oracle regarding Rdb (great product), they talk a good
fight
but... What about the de-support notice on Database Integrator and how
many
Oracle sales rep's have you seen actively trying to push Rdb?

Has anyone heard a release date for PowerHouse V8 on VMS? How long has
this
been planned? Maybe Cognos also have these doubts.

Don't get me wrong I believe VMS/Rdb to be one of the best systems
around:
it's stable, fast and has lots of useful tools. But I'm just a
technician
that shovels the muck after it's hit the fan.

Ged

G'day Ged

Detroit Edison's Fermi nuclear site did this about 1.5 years ago. I was
invloved at the beggining of the project. Try emailing
mehr-maybdih@dte.com
or sharmap@dte.com for details.

Why are you you moving from VMS/Oracle Rdb to unix/Oracle 7? ???

TCO on VMS/alpha systems over 3 to 5 years is a lot less than either
AIX,
Solaris and especially HP/UX systems. Oracle Rdb is a faster RDBMS than
Oracle 7, if you make use of embedded SQL in your PowerHouse code and
database triggers, and has better management tools.

Regards,

Blue

(I currently work in a HP/UX, Oracle 7.3.4, PH 7.33.d3 environment but
have
worked with VMS/Rdb for many years)

Hi,

Has anyone ported their PowerHouse system from OpenVMS with an Oracle
Rdb
database to a Unix environment with Oracle (classic) database?

Does anyone have a list of problem that can/could occur? I'm wondering
if
transaction handling (two-phase commit) and transaction models change
their
behaviour with the change in database. I don't seem to be able to find
anything on the Cognos website.

Thanks in advance for any info' that may help.
