PH-Client Problems

I would appreciate any comments/advice on some PH-Client related issues
which are proving critical to our business.

Client Environment: PH-Client 2.1c1 under Windows 95

Server Environment: PH 7.33d3 and Oracle 7.3.3 on Unix (AIX 4.2)

(due to problems encountered with moving to PH 8.13d and PH-Client 2.1e, we
have reverted back to the previous versions in order to meet a
fast-approaching release date to our customer base)

1. PHWIN1E Errors

These have been a constant source of problems experienced by our customers.
There is no set pattern as to when PH-Client will crash or how often. Some
customers have reported individual staff experiencing several crashes every
hour. On each occasion the customer has to restart the application. On
many occasions when PH-Client crashes it results in data corruption in the
database.

2. Slow Performance of External Calls

We identified a performance problem when running external routines from
PH-Client resulting in the call taking over 3 times longer to execute than
the equivalent call made from PH (terminal). This resulted in bug
SCC#240030 being raised by Cognos Support over a year ago. This was
followed up last week by a statement that 'it is unlikely that a fix will be
put into PowerHouse Client. However, performance improvements will be
implemented in PowerHouse 8.23 and Axiant 3.0.'. This is a major problem
for us because our applications contain critical functionality which can
only be performed through using the 'do external' verb.

3. Running on Windows NT

We are aware that this is an unsupported environment for PH-Client, but if
our products are run under NT in a live customer environment there are
noticeably fewer PHWIN1E occurrences.

Thanks

Dave Barker
