Thank you Alison for some clarification about PowerHouse futures re 7.10 and
8.10. This is the first time I have seen a clear statement that existing VMS
users are not expected to upgrade to version 8, though I had worked out some
time ago that it would not be a sensible thing for us to do. I thought that
the original idea was that 8.00 was for people that urgently needed version
8 on VMS and 8.10 would have the VMS specific features put back for
upgraders, but I obviously got that one wrong.
A number of others have asked the obvious "what next" question. 7.10.Gn?
7.10.H? 7.20? I don't know (and I know that you don't either at present). I
know that I don't want to go through another major upgrade unless I have
to - we finally went live with 7.10.G1 on 28 Feb. Recompiling everything
was, and always is, a pain, but at least this time we got some real benefit
from it (Y2K resilience - I hesitate to use the word compliance).
A number of others have raised the issue of Architect. This is not
synonymous with POW/PHD on VMS, it is a separate product - we tried it and
decided not to use it. From other responses I gather that on some platforms
it is the only way of doing on-line dictionary maintenance.
Anyway, I think this had been a useful discussion of the kind that makes
this sort of forum worthwhile.
