Powerhouse Quiz takes 60%+ CPU in EXEC mode

Chris,

I am not a VMS person, but I recall that when we had PowerHouse on
a VMS system before, we had a 'batch' queue set up so that all
the user's production reports (Quizes) only went through the cpu
one at a time. When we converted to UNIX, it was necessary
to re-invent this queueing system, else typing speed at the terminals
would have been terrible.

If this were Unix, I'd say take a look at system resources such as
amount of memory, swap (paging) space, etc.

Cannot recall the methods, but it seems there have been
several excellent presentations in the papers of past
user conferences about tuning and performance in
Quiz and Qtp...

Subject:	Powerhouse Quiz takes 60%+ CPU in EXEC mode

OpenVMS Alpha 7.1, RMS, Cognos Powerhouse 7.10.G1 Quiz.

Some of our Quiz reports are CPU intensive, which is mildly surprising: I'd
have expected a reporting tool to be I/O intensive, but then it's a 4GL.

We get around this by dropping the priority on the fly for interactive Quiz &
QTP users (using PH_SITEHOOK). We can see 90%+ CPU usage on a single Quiz user.

Even more surprising, it appears to be predominantly (60%+) EXEC mode (ie RMS
execution - no database present).

I've no idea how I'd go about making RMS use so much CPU without thrashing the
disk. Is this reasonable, or is Quiz re-reading the same record lots of times
so that RMS can optimise away the disk access, or mis-tuned files, or what ?

Any suggestions for tuning, debugging, or further diagnosis would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris Sharman
