The ZDATE datatype was originally intended as support for Hewlett Packard's
MM/3000 system wherein this method of encoding began. It can also be used as
an alternative to physical expansion of zoned dates. Of course changing to
ZDATE is logical expansion in that the new dates are century included and
all logic must be changed to handle that. You're right in that any
non-PowerHouse apps that need to use this data would have to have a
translation. However, those apps would need Y2K remediation in any case.
This is not suggested as a perfect solution but as just one of many options.

I would think converting zoned fields this way would be very
dangerous to non-Powerhouse apps using those fields.
