G'day all

As no other VMS fan has said anything in response to John's comments on the
HP/MPE platform, I will.

I have the fortune of working on HP/MPE, HP/UNIX and OpenVMS. OpenVMS has
the records to prove it is more reliable, especially on a VAX, than HP/MPE.
At the site where I am writing this, there exists all three of the above
environments. The HP/MPE box is the LEAST reliable of the three and goes
down whenever the airconditioning fluctuates.

OpenVMS is a considerably more user friendly environment than either MPE or
UNIX.

OpenVMS will work on 2 different CPU architectures at the moment and maybe
more in the future.

RMS, a very good and fast indexed file management system also comes free
with OpenVMS.

I don't know about the price advantage of HP/MPE but I suspect John is right
there. Unfortunately, Compaq does not price its OpenVMS systems competitive
with Windows NT or I believe even the HP offerings.

Of course none of this helps the original questioner. If their management
says it should be Windows NT/Oracle 8 then they wont have much say in the
matter and just have to make the best of it.

There is a lot of work to be done to migrate the non-relational PH code to a
relational DBMS environment and I wish them luck.

End of tirade! ;)
