Cognos conversion from mainframe to PC

Before I'm accused of initiating the downfall of the mainframe computer,
let me offer a few more details.

I am a old Cobol programmer turned 4GL dude. In fact, I am an old RPG II,
Cobol programmer turned 4GL dude. My office mate is Cobol and NCR NEAT3.
I remember when there were no PCs. The issue of snowfall and walking to
school barefoot is another story.

I really like my HP. Cognos has been bery, bery good to me.

BUT. . .

We were acquired back in '96, and Corporate's mandate was to lose the HP
and connect everyone by telephone line to a central unit in Memphis,
Tennessee, since a telephone line in infinitely more stable than a direct
cable. What do I know? I'm software, not hardware.

Some of apps are unique to this hospital and have to be kept in place by
legal obligation, so we were faced with the choice of migrate or re-write.
I immediately chose migration, favoring the familiar over what was behind
door #2. Sometimes I wonder. . .

This was not my idea. I don't like changing things that work. However, to
paraphrase the immortal words of Texas gubernatorial candidate Clayton
Williams if it's inevitable, "you might as well lay back and enjoy it."

I want to thank those who replied, and I plan post updates to my situation,
i.e., watch the hair turn gray :-)

TWIST #1

Thanks to Charles, we have a clearer understanding of what we need from
Oracle. My boss was elated, and didn't mind the price as long as it was
justified.

Along comes Cognos saying Oracle 8i might not work. I called Cognos, one
of the techs called Oracle. What will be the outcome? Is it Oracle 8i?
Is it Oracle 7? Stay tuned for the next chapter of I Was A Teenage
Migration!

Oops, gotta run! They're taking down my mail server!
