Cognos coversion from mainframe to PC

Walter,

I had the same puzzling experience. For reasons I will not elaborate on in
this post, we are migrating from Powerhouse to a UNIFACE/Oracle solution and
due to my Powerhouse background, I assumed that I would need to have an
Oracle license for each user, whether they were actively hitting the
database, or just sitting there looking at a screen. And, of course, the
Oracle rep did not try to correct my understanding. As you know Oracle
licensing schemes are costly, so this was not going to be financially
feasible for us.

However, I found out from the enterprise solution vendor that a concurrent
licenses refers to the number of simultaneous hits to the database, so for
our institution (about 20-30 users) we would only need about 8 licenses. Any
hits that exceed this license limit get stuck in a queue to wait for the
next available slot. If things bog down too much, you just add another
license. I could be totally wrong in this but this is how it was explained
to me.
