Cognos coversion from mainframe to PC

Hey guys,

I'm new to the list, so let me introduce myself.

My name is Walter Lucas, and I'm a mainframe Cognos programmer working on a
HP-3000 900 series using MPE. My office mate and I have been at this for
15 years now, but times are a-changin'.

What we are currently looking at is migrating our homegrown applications
from the HP onto the NT platform. We pretty much settled on Oracle as a
database generator, but we keep getting confusing answers as to what Oracle
we need and how many licenses.

What I need to find out is if there is anyone in the group who has made
such a conversion and how you determined which version of Oracle to use (or
Sequel or other DB). Did you have to license each user even though they
were not using Oracle, but accessing a database through Cognos?

There is much confusion here on this last question because we have bought
packages for the hospital coded in C or C+ that use Access and DBase
databases, but we were not required to buy Access or Dbase to use them.

Any help is greatly appreciated, even a pointer in the right direction.
Also, I'll gladly offer more information as required.

Thanks

Walter Lucas
