OK, I confess: I was once (briefly, occasionally) a VAX Cobol programmer.
VAX Cobol certainly does understand most datatypes (COMP-1,2,3 etc).

I guess other Cobols probably have extensions too, although perhaps not so much
as VAX Cobol: that was so extended a Pascal programmer like me could write
nice properly structured programs.
