PH on Linux

Hi,
This is exactly the kernel of the problem IMHO:
What Cognos could consider, is the long-term benefit of offering PowerHouse
on Linux at a low price. If your company policy is that every effort done
must pay off immediately - or within a very short timeframe, you are
blocking yourself from letting more customers in. Not the - after all pretty
few - that buys a SOLUTION plus whatever hardware, OS and 4GL this solution
needs, but I mean really new markets.
The VB example is very good, and so is the MS-Office offer for students,
where you get the complete package for next to nothing, it's exactly the
same business, paying off later. Lots of other success-stories available.
You could consider PH for Linux a "starter platform". Maybe you don't want
to build your production on this set-up - but you could develop and mature
new applications here - and when ready, port all the stuff to your favourite
platform like UNIX or MPE. Since developing new applications is so costly a
business, fairly priced OS's and development tools are needed. Even demoes
would be far easier - without those annoying temporary keys (and their
expiration!).
We recently did a large port from MPE/iX and Image/SQL to SUN Solaris and
Oracle. It was tough, admitted, but we came thru and in fact with far less
problems and resource-consumption than initially expected, thank you
Cognos - and going from LinUX to UNIX should be pretty straightforward so
the porting business should not block such a project.
But, if the good folks at Cognos really want new markets for the classic
platforms, which are, as I read it, having great come-backs these days -
this could be one of many obvious ways to go.
With kind regards
