COGNOS® ANNOUNCES POWERHOUSE® WEB

-- Company Extends the Value of its Leading Fourth Generation Language --

Burlington, MA, May 11, 1998 - Cognos® (NASDAQ:COGNF; TSE:CSN) today
announced Cognos PowerHouse® Web, a product that will bring World Wide Web
deployment capabilities to the company's popular server-based 4th generation
programming language, Cognos PowerHouse 4GL. The new Web product will be
previewed at the Cognos International User Conference in Atlanta, Georgia,
from June 10 to 12, and it is scheduled to be available for customer testing
in June. The product is expected to be commercially available in early fall.

"Our customers have invested a lot of time and money in developing,
maintaining and enhancing their business-critical PowerHouse-based
applications. They now tell us that they need to deliver Web-based
applications for competitive advantage," said Rob Ashe, senior vice
president of Products for Cognos. "Just as we have evolved PowerHouse in the
past to keep pace with changes in our customers' needs and in technology,
Cognos is now extending PowerHouse to the Web, and protecting our customers'
investments in their PowerHouse skills and applications with proven, stable
technology. Introducing PowerHouse Web is the next logical step in the
product's evolution."

PowerHouse support for the Web will consist of extensions to the existing
PowerHouse 4GL language together with an optional suite of new products,
collectively known as PowerHouse Web. The extensions to the well understood
PowerHouse syntax will be included in the next release of PowerHouse 4GL.

PowerHouse Web will consist of PowerHouse Web Server, PowerHouse Web
Administrator, PowerHouse Web Configuration Utility and PowerHouse CGI.
These tools will receive browser-originated requests via the customer's Web
server, process those requests and return results to the user in the form of
an HTML page.

Today, Cognos customers can use PowerHouse 4GL for server-based application
development on Digital OpenVMS, Hewlett-Packard MPE/iX and many leading UNIX
platforms, accessing both proprietary file systems and leading relational
databases. Additionally, using Cognos Axiant® 4GL, on Windows 95 or Windows
NT, they can develop, migrate and maintain PowerHouse applications in a
robust, multi-user, visual development environment. Customers can then
deploy those applications to run on a variety of UNIX, Windows NT, MPE/iX,
and OpenVMS servers in a number of flexible and scaleable, standalone,
client/server and server-based architectures.

With the announcement of PowerHouse Web, Cognos continues to demonstrate its
commitment to customers of its 4GL application development tools.

Availability

PowerHouse 4GL is available on mid-range servers such as UNIX, OpenVMS and
MPE/iX. PowerHouse Web will be demonstrated in public for the first time at
the Cognos International User Conference, June 10-12, in Atlanta, Georgia,
and is scheduled to be available for customer testing later the same month.
PowerHouse Web is expected to be commercially available in early fall, and
pricing will be announced in conjunction with product availability.

Cognos PowerHouse® 4GL

PowerHouse 4GL is a proven, server-based application development environment
that allows business-critical programs to be written quickly and modified
easily. A specification-based language, PowerHouse 4GL comes complete with
interactive screens and menus, volume processes, and flexible production
reporting capabilities. At the heart of the PowerHouse 4GL engine is an
extensive set of automated application models that create fully functional
applications with minimal coding.

Cognos Axiant® 4GL

Axiant 4GL, which shares the same processing engine as PowerHouse 4GL and is
a companion product to it, is a visual development environment for creating
business-critical client/server applications. It supports platform and
database independence, enabling applications to be distributed across
clients and servers in a variety of flexible architectures: thin client, fat
client, mobile, and server-only...and it does all of this from a single
source code. Included in Axiant 4GL are powerful tools for automating the
migration of PowerHouse 4GL applications into new environments.
