2 PH user limit on VMS

Hi Terry,

Surprised to see so few suggestions on this.

I would suggest you do not edit SYLOGIN. COM as errors could lock everyone out.

Put code in LOGIN. COM of each PH Quick user. Easy way would be to create a flag file for each user prior to running Quick. Deleting file on exit from Quick.

I assume that all PH users run a Quick screen menu from a captive account (this is VMS?).

If the number of flag files is greater than one, then goto exit with optional message.

To get the code you need, login to a DCL prompt and

1. Type HELP LEXICALS
2. Type HELP DCL

I am surprised that your license vendor does not provide you with the code. Maybe they don't care?

I doubt that a contractor would charge you more than a day.

I would like to prevent someone from logging in, more than twice. Hence not exceeding the license limit,
and preventing others from logging in.

Hi,
Is there a way of limiting logon sessions to eg: two (2), in powerhouse preferably via LOGIN.COM script.
HP OpenVMS Industry Standard 64 Operating System, Version V8.4 Pow: Active Version: 840G .
Thanks in advance.

Terry

I suggest that you ask this as a general question on an OpenVMS forum. You don’t want to limit user logins specifically, just the number of application, in this case PowerHouse, launches.

It might be a bit tricky if you launch the various PowerHouse components separately. In other words, user 1 is using QUICK and User 2 is using QUICK. So if you have a license count of 2, user 3 can’t use QUICK, but user 3 can use QUIZ, assuming there aren’t two other users using QUIZ. So you’d need to count the individual components.

I don’t know how to do that in OpenVMS, but other OpenVMS users, not necessarily PowerHouse users, may know.

Hi Chris,

What I want is for the system to automatically block an individual from logging in a third time.
I'm seeing whether an OpenVms guy can help, as Mr deskin suggested.

Assuming this is an Open VMS environment, you could try performing the ‘SHOW USER username /OUT=filename’, search the output for ‘Total number of users = ‘ and where that value is more than 1 , you have duplicate user logins. This will not inform you on how many Powerhouse sessions you have open, only the number of logins by a specific user.
