powerh-l Digest, Vol 113, Issue 2

I had tried that - same result.
Also - "What happens if the existing subfile is open by another process? That is, open in a manner that prevents it being overwritten. Does QTP fail or does it create a new file?"
This in our source directory and used only for compiling. As I mentioned, it's out legacy stuff and I'm the only one using it, plus it seems to work with the semicolon. Ironically that's also a Phouse comment character, but is apparently not being recognized as such in his circumstance.
Also - "How did you create the most recent version of the subfile and subfile dictionary? When I try on our system (VMS 7.1) using QTP it deletes the existing version and creates a new subfile as version 1 (see message below)?"
We have a process when we do our builds that creates the .sfd's. It makes new versions when it runs.
I'm not having this trouble with other subfiles, so it's not a systemwide corruption problem.

Not quite, the semi-colon "forces" access to just the top level version.
Logically it should be the same, (checking the lower versions for access would be pointless, and "bug like" behavior" but you never know...), Try copying the older versions of the .sf/.sfd somewhere else, or renaming them to something like "name_bak.sf", In a perfect would you wouldn't need to check this, but it's not a perfect world...

You're still not understanding - a semicolon and no semicolon both reference the same .sfd file and version.

Do the old/new subfiles have the same ownership/access rights? (hitting just the ";" version may be side stepping a security Problem if you can access the top version of the sf/sfd, but not one or more of the lower versions...).
Just guessing in the dark here...

No, there is no logical. It's in the directory where the .sfd is.
Did you not notice that it works fine if I put the semicolon on the end? For those not familiar with VMS, that denotes the highest version. The default with no version signifier is also supposed to denote the highest version. It's not seeing the subfile at all with no version signifier.
We have been using this subfile for months without issue until a new version was created last Friday.

Are you physically in the same directory as the subfile. (I'm not seeing any sort of logical name which would point To a default directory or directory search list for subfiles).
Given there is no logical name in the subfile open, is the subfile normally created/processed as part of a batch run Which DOES create a subfile, then sets a logical name (SF$IA_1099_TAPE_2014_BKR) to point to it?
(search your batch ".com" files for SF$IA_1099_TAPE_2014_BKR to see it's actually a logical...).
Do you have a "Fat Finger" typo there? Usually "we" would us a logical to point to a subfile Directory, typically your subfile reference would look like:
Access *SF:IA_1099_TAPE_2014_BKR
(Look for the subfile IA_1099_TAPE_2014_BKR in the directory(s) pointed to by the logical SF...
Just thinking out loud on a slow morning, (foolishly before finishing my first cup of coffee...).

This is on OpenVMS V8.3, which has multiple file versions. I get similar results when I use qshow.
Any ideas on what may have caused this?
