Adding to an RDB table and not recompiling.

Hi All:
In SQL, for all the columns that have been added to the table create default values if NULL is not ok.
Powehouse should run with a short projection list. 7.10 runs with a projection list equal to all the referenced columns.
&.10 will use non-default dictionary initial values if no item statement in the code for the column.
8.40 runs with a projection list of all the known columns at the time of compilation and uses PowerHouse initial values.
In the future, you may get a nasty surprize if you re-compile for some other reason. E.G. non-null trigger executing etc
A lot of us are guilty of programming on top of base tables when we should be programming on top of updatable view of base tables.
Regards,
Peter Bateman

It's been a while since I used PowerHouse against an RDB table, but I suspect you will have execution errors if the reports/screens, etc. detect a different table layout in the dictionary than expected (compared against the layout it found during last compile), even if the changed column is not specifically referenced.
If I were you, I would test it first by trying to run a screen and report that have not been re-compiled, and if it's a problem, you will know right away. As long as they run without getting an execution error, you should be fine.
If not, you're into full re-compile mode! (I always use scripts to do this...saves time the next round.)
Cheers,
Vicki

Well, PH Listers, apart from the idea?that it "makes sense" to recompile the whole portfolio of programs that access an OpenVMS Oracle Rdb table that has had a column or columns added to it, can anyone please tell me what unexpected results one could expect if one doesn't perform said recompiles ex. to the half dozen of the programs that need the new columns. I have an app with about 130 programs that access Table "A" and we're adding a column or two to it, appending to the existing structure. Said fields are not indexed in any way.
?
Thanks for any information.
