Thanks Herald,
Yes, the disk is ODS-5
Volume Status: ODS-5, subject to mount verification, protected subsystems
enabled, write-through caching enabled, hard links enabled, special files
enabled.
The 'SET PROCESS/PARSE=EXTENDED' is used when downloading and restoring the files.
Alfred

You are installing to an ODS-5 disk aren't you?
do a show device/full on dka1, you'll get a pagefull display, near the bottom will be a "volume status" line,
verify that the actually is ODS-5 instead of the VMS default of ODS-2...
Volume Status: ODS-5, subject to mount verification, write-back caching
enabled.
you can do a "set volume dka1 /structure=5" to upgrade to ODS-5, but I would run a tape backup first
"just in case", wouldn't hurt to run an "analyze/disk/repair/confirm dka1" first as well just in case you
do have latent errors that "set volume/structure=5" can't handle...
I also remember something about "set process/parse_stype=extended" before starting the oracle
installation, (been a few years since I've run a oracle installation on VMS, that step may not be required
any more...
The ODS5 thing is a must, oracle is using UNIX style names in it's VMS kit, and the depth of the
distribution kit directories is deeper than the 7 or so levels that an ODS2 disk allows...

Subject Trouble installing Oracle Client on OpenVMS
Hello, I'm trying to install Oracle Client 10.2 on OpenVMS (Version V8.3-1H1). I'm only installing the Client since the Oracle database resides on a different box. When I run the installer (@runinstaller) it displays the following output:
Checking OpenVMS quota settings...
OpenVMS quota setting checked successfully.
Please specify the location to be used for ORACLE_HOME
ORACLE_HOME location: dka1:[trs.oracle_client]
Please specify the location for temporary files created during installation.
(this must be a directory on an ODS-5 formatted disk)
Enter scratchPath: DKA1:[ORACLE]
Copying runInstaller components to temporary location...

After about 15 minutes it brings up the Oracle Universal Installer window in X Windows momentarily
before giving this error:
DKA1:[ORACLE.OraInstall2012-03-12_03-47-27PM]oraInstall2012-03-12_03-47-27PM.out (file currently locked by another user)
I've tried it twice with the same error.
There were no other users on the system.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Alfred--
