Thank you for all your suggestions, as usual it never ceases to amaze how many responses I get when I post a problem.

From all the suggestions received I began working through them and found that by changing the order of the linkages in the access statement the problem was resolved. Whether this has any knock on effects remains to be seen, so I'll do a bit more testing on it. But once again thanks for all your help
