[Bulk] Migrating from AIX/Oracle to Linux/SQL server

I agree.

We had issues migrating to Powerhouse on AIX with SQL server on windows
box. We had several issues with the migration and finally ended up with
Powerhouse on AIX with Oracle on windows server.

If I remember correctly we had to use a third party API to connect to
SQL Server database which is not straightforward like connecting to
Oracle from Powerhouse.

Two major technical issues within our application forced us to drop it.

1. We could not figure out a way to implement record level locking from
within Powerhouse quick programs on a multi-user environment with SQL
server databases.

2. We had issues with our reports due to difference in collating
sequence on SQL server. Tried several things and finally gave up.

Here is my advice, and I have worked on every platform (except AS400)
since
1986.

DO NOT USE SQL Server when working with Powerhouse.

Keep your existing Oracle Database and move it to the Linux machine.

OR

If you want to move to the windows platform, migrate your application
and
database to Powerhouse for Windows and Oracle for Windows.
There have been people on this list who have tried to use SQL Server,
and
FAILED! I know the product will work, but performance SUCKS!

I have a client that has been running this platform for 2 years now,
without
any issues.
I also have a client that has been running powerhouse for Windows since
2003
(ISAM), with no issues.

We are considering a migration from a setup with PowerHouse on AIX
backed by
an Oracle database running on the same box to PowerHouse on Linux backed
by
a Microsoft SQL server running on a Windows box.
We have no concerns regarding running PowerHouse on Linux but do see
some
challenges with using SQL server. For instance, is the existing Oracle
database with views, triggers and similar PL/SQL based functionality
easily
migrated to SQL server using the tools Microsoft supply?
Is communication with the SQL server database from Powerhouse code
functioning, without any need for rewriting?
Any references to examples of successful migrations of this kind and/or
whitepapers, guidelines or other relevant material would be very much
appreciated.

Best regards,

Ole Henrik Lemvigh
