I've used both Ultraedit and Textpad, my preferrence is textpad, it's easier to use.

I'm starting on a small lift-and-shift from 3000 to Windows. Does anyone
have any suggestions for a coding editor alternative to 'notepad' ? I have
used slickedit before, but that is somewhat more expensive than I can
justify. What have listers used that they can recommend?

Thanks

I have used several editors over the last 25 years and I finally gave in to
using a windows version of VI about 10 years ago.

The Product is VIM and it is a free product

It is more powerful than the VI editor on Unix/Linux.  The editor has code
coloring, I programmed all the powerhouse keywords into VIM, so I can see
syntax errors as I am typing (I can send you this).

The best part is, with one editor you can work on Windows/Unix and Linux.

This is a personal observation, not an IBM recommendation. I used TextPad
for years at Cognos. Someone had done a PowerHouse syntax colouring
template, but it wasn't kept up to date. I remember comparing text
editors, and for me that was the best. Your mileage may differ.

Bob

I've been using Programmer Studio for many years. This is a powerful code editor which allows you to edit files on any system onto which an ftp server is running, including HP3000 which is very well known from Programmer Studio. It knows many languages including Cobol, C++, Pascal, Fortran, Java, html, Posix shell, ..., but also HP3000 CI (command interpreter), HP Turbo Image (database schema), Robelle Suprtool, ... , and of course, Powerhouse, all with color highlighting.

Knowledge of the language you're using allows Programmer Studio to display your program's structure (requests for qtp, paragraph names or file descriptions for cobol, ...), to be able to comment/uncomment a selection in one click (because it knows what is the comment syntax of your current language), and so on.

It has been sold by Whisper Technology for many years but is now free. Just enter Programmer Studio in Google and you should find many sites offering it for free download.
For instance, I could find it a few minutes ago here :                http://www.toggle.com/lv/group/view/kl41316/Programmer_Studio.htm

Hope This Helps
Jerome
