Hi John, I'm sure others will eventually give more in depth info.

You're correct the run command fires off a subprocess which stays alive
until the user exits their powerhouse session. Most of the users process
information is available in the subprocess with some caveats like
process logicals,.... VMS handles it beautifully and quite easily and
you can pass and share some things between the users process and
subprocess. Performance may have more to do with the machine that vms is
running on or how it's configured or how/what you're trying to do.

Dear Listers:

 

Can anyone (25 words or less) explain to me how OpenVMS handles the
invocation of an OS RUN command from within PH Quick? My understanding
is that, say, Quick Program "A" performs a Run Command "B" statement
which would open (spawn) a new session and perform whatever that "B:
program is supossed to do. If "B" opened files, database, transmitted
data, etc. it could only do so within 'it"s own' session/spawned
process? Or am I missing something big here? I am not VMS internals
kinda guy, but.....from a logical viewpoint. I'm a performance concerend
individual.

 

Just trying to get my mind clear.
