hobby project

Hi,
 
as a Powerhouse-programmer who wants to start a low-cost hobby project
on Linux, what should I choose as tools?
 
LAMP is most probably part of my answer, but I really would like to use
Powerhouse for batch-processing.
 
What tools do you use for your hobby projects? I could consider to buy a
Powerhouse-license, but is there any free databases that really works
with PH on Linux?
Is the DB2 really as "free" as IBM says?
