Try backing out of your screen when the cursor is still in the temp
field.

To add to the continuing saga of temp fields...

Just did a real quick-and-dirty screen with a temp field (eg. file xxx 
primary, generate, go)

Went into fnd mode
Left all fields on the primary file alone and went directly to the temp 
field and changed the value from its default of '0' to 5
Immediately backed out without any kind of update
No warning message.....

I have seen this problem occur many times for many different reasons --
very 
tough to de-bug without having more info, I'm afraid!  May have to just 
continue with the elimination rounds.  It is possible there is an ITEM
xxx 
FINAL value somewhere or an errand LET (as noted before) ...
