Moving from RMS files to a relational database-

Hi Desmond:

There are a lot of factors to consider when making an investment in a relational database.
DB2, Oracle and MS SQL Server are in my opinion the 3 most popular.

    1) Cost of ownership. Including new hardware, software and on site expertise.

    2) How much growth is expected in users and data volume. The volumes indicated in your
e-mail are not high and I would suspect any of the three databases merntion above would not have
a problem nor would Oracle/RDB. Before you buy make sure your database can handle over 2gb tables.

    3) What do the users want that they are not getting now?
e.g. fulltext searches on character data.

    4) Are you also planning to give the users reporting tools such as ReportNet or Crystal Reports , etc.?
If so you may need more capacity as some queries can consume
a lot of database server resources.

    5) Are you thinking of going to Itanium? If so you will have to upgrade both your version of
        OpenVMS and PowerHouse.
