Risks of staying on COGNOS 8.39.C1 on MPE/iX 7.5

Might as well jump in with the "official" response.

As you say, 8.39C1 is not a supported release. The current supported
version is 8.49E.

To move from 8.39C1 to 8.49E, everything must be recompiled. And
regardless of how hard we try and make sure that everything is upward
compatible (except for what's documented in the release notes), nothing
is guaranteed so you should test all of your applications to make sure.

In our experience, other than what's documented, there are very few
differences between versions. Of course the further apart the "from" and
"to" version, the more chance that something unsuspected is different.
8.49E was shipped in July and we have had no reported issues other than
the normal installation questions.

"Compelling" is a personal thing. I would point out that with the new
PowerHouse version you get full development support, new features, bug
fixes, etc. There's also PowerHouse Web if you need Web applications
using the same language.

As for whether anything is likely to break, I can't realistically answer
that. Regardless of PowerHouse, what about your HPe3000 hardware and MPE
software? What are you going to do after HP ends development support at
the end of 2008 and limited extended support at the end of 2010?

You could migrate your PowerHouse application to a flavor of UNIX,
including Linux, or Windows. We support Eloquence which has an IMAGE
emulation layer so the only things you'd have to change are platform
specifics such as operating system commands. There are other IMAGE
emulation options as well. If you want to evaluate a migration, we have
a Migration Guide freely available for download at

Subject: Risks of staying on COGNOS 8.39.C1 on MPE/iX 7.5

Greetings,

We are on COGNOS 8.39.C1, which is not a supported release. We are on
MPE/iX 7.5.

We are weighing the risks of staying on this release indefinitely,
versus the effort and risks associated with updating to a supported
release.

Others in the shop have been through an update before. Is it true that
all PowerHouse 4GL code has to be recompiled? Is it common practice to
test all QUICK, QTP, and QUIZ applications after updating? Is it common
to find things that work differently and have to be changed after
updating?

Is there any compelling reason to upgrade?

Is anything likely to break between now and 2027 if we don't?
