Subfile Enhancement

Absolutely NOT. There is no such thing as cancelling licenses. Except
for some early licenses, all of licenses are perpetual, non-exclusive,
and non-transferable. So if someone wants to continue using PowerHouse
on MPE for the next 20 years or more, they are perfectly free to do so.

Support is a different story. Support is typically an annual fee. While
we would love to continue to support PowerHouse on MPE indefinitely, we
can't if our hardware isn't being supported. So we are as dependant on
HP as our customers. We will provide a limited form of support even
after HP stops supporting the HPe3000, mainly aimed at helping customers
migrate off of MPE. This is explained in our Product Roadmap on our web
site at http://powerhouse.cognos.com.

Are you implying Cognos will cancel all their MPE licenses?

(Probably not.)

Since I'm on the OpenMPE Board, I'd certainly want to know about that.

I thought that PH on MPE was no more - at least in a year or so L

I'd have a really hard time selling that idea considering that the
subfile dictionary is a separate file on all platforms except MPE.

You could possibly put the description part into an additional file,
that way current processing wouldn't be affected, and all subfile types
would then have a description part.

Technically speaking, a NODICT subfile is NOT a self-describing file. It
is typically used to interface to some other software, not PowerHouse.
If we start using special records, then the other software must take
that into account. This would be a break from tradition with PowerHouse.
I'm not saying that it would not be useful, I'm just saying that it's
not something we've ever done. Besides, if you want the description or
any other dictionary type information, you can create a regular subfile
and ignore the dictionary portion as required. Just my opinion.

I think you should allow the DESCRIPTION option on any subfile
regardless of NODICT or not for documentation purposes. Even though it
will not appear in the subfile, it is still useful.

Any chance we can see this "list" once it is finalized????

Interesting. I've never seen this one before. I don't think we would
allow the description if it's a NODICT subfile but the dictionary
certainly has a DESCRIPTION option on the FILE and RECORD statements. I
don't know how difficult it would be to add to the subfile equivalents
and the routines. I'll add it to the list.

Thanks

Bob,

Continuing with your original request for enhancement requests;

Add a DESCRIPTION option to the SUBFILE statement within QUIZ and QTP
that could be read by QSHOW.

Where would you store the information? If it has a dictionary, within
the minidictionary file. If it doesn't, at the start of the file with a
leading integer value that points to the actual start of data OR do not
allow this option.
