Distributing the load across SORTWORK files

13 years ago my System Manager surprised me by saying that the
external sort would be much quicker than a sort in Quiz. I'd been taught
that it wasn't, but exiting Quiz and sorting the subfile reduced elapsed
time from 5 hours to 10 minutes.
Using Quiz to produce a subfile on the Vax and then sorting it, you can
still use the initial Dictionary portion of the subfile for the
resulting sorted data; you have to rename it to the new filename and you
can then just Access *sortedsubfile and you're away.

Subject: Distributing the load across SORTWORK files
We are doing a very large sort in quiz. It consistently runs
for a time and then dies. We have 10 SORTWORK files defined, but only
one seems to be used. It grows to several million blocks before the
process dies. The others are virtually untouched.
We are running OpenVMS V6.2 with PowerHouse version 7.10E6.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to distribute the sort load
across multiple SORTWORK files.
Thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer on this.
